One of the best things about travelling is the people. The locals you meet, the life-long friends you make and the thousands of memories you create together. The best way to fully immerse oneself abroad is to become more than a tourist. Live, breathe and work there. Hopping on a working holiday experience in New Zealand is the adventure of a lifetime.

What is a working holiday experience like?

Our New Zealand Working Holiday programs offer Canadians between 18 and 35 the opportunity to kick start their trip down to New Zealand with employment support, visa application assistance, and amazing arrival adventures. It’s a great way to start your journey as an honorary Kiwi.

Young Canadians can embark on a working holiday experience in New Zealand for up to 23 months. There’s no restriction as to where you can go. Most working holiday-ers opt for casual and flexible work that allows them to see as much of the country as they can.

Our New Zealand Working Holiday Adventure Experience program allows you to make the absolute most of your experience!

Start your escapade successfully equipped with expert knowledge, resources and a team backing you up. Because this is an adventure, you’ll also get the opportunity to see the best of what New Zealand has to offer before you settled in your home-away-from-home and get down to business.

What’s a Kiwi?

Kiwi is a friendly nickname for New Zealanders after the country’s icon – the Kiwi bird. Not to be mistaken with the furry fruit! Indigenous New Zealanders, the Maori peoples, named the small flightless bird after the sound it made, keee weee.

What’s our program like?

Not only does the New Zealand Working Holiday Adventure Program make the whole experience of moving to a new country a breeze – but it also is, quite literally, the start of an unforgettable adventure!

Day 1

You’ve made it to Auckland! It’s the beginning of a new adventure! A little tired and probably jet-lagged, but still excited for what’s to come. Your airport pickup and accommodation have been taken care of by yours truly.

You now get some time to head out and explore New Zealand’s largest cities however you wish! Just make sure to come back in time for our Welcome Orientation to get this show on the road.

Day 2

Say bye-bye (for now) to Auckland and head to the ocean! Enjoy the pristine beaches of gorgeous Cathedral Cove. The perfect place for a swim, a walk, and taking plenty of photos to make those still at home jealous!

After that, you’ll head to nearby Hot Water Beach. Exactly as you’d expect, it’s a unique thermal beach. You can even get digging in the sand and create your very own hot tub. Wouldn’t that be nice in cold Canadian winters?!

Day 3

We hope you’ve packed your hiking boots because up next is a hike through Karangahake Gorge. The old mining tunnels have been reclaimed by nature and it’s a sight to behold.

Ever wanted to see the stars in the middle of the day? …Underground? Well, now you can! Waitomo is a world-famous glow worm cave and it’s the next stop on your New Zealand working holiday experience.

If you’re a true adventurer, you can even tube through the caves!

Day 4

What would a visit to New Zeland be without a mention of Lord of the Rings? The first thing you’ll do on the fourth day of your working holiday adventure is a visit to the Shire of Hobbiton.

If you’re a big fan, you can also visit the Hobbiton Movie Set.

After that, it’s off to Rotorua. Renowned for its geothermal and Māori culture, this place feels mystical. Bubbling mud pools, natural hot springs and rocketing geysers are sure to keep you toasty.

Day 5

Continue your exploration of the geothermal reserve and catch a glimpse of New Zealand’s largest geyser!

Next up, visit the Tamaki Māori Village. You’ll get to experience a Welcome Ceremony and learn so much about the Māori culture. Fill your belly with food from a traditional hāngi and listen to myths around a bonfire.

Finish your eventful day with a relaxing dip in a forest hot spring. And off to bed you go in a traditional carved sleeping hut.

Day 6

After a restful sleep in your little hut, you’ll get to head to Lake Taupo. A bit different from the lakes back home, this one is actually an extinct volcano crater!

Next up, contrarily to what you may have been told, you’ll go chasing waterfalls. More precisely, the roaring Huka Falls. There’s so much to do in the area, pick your adventure and we’ll make it happen! Plenty of people opt for skydiving here, will you be amongst them?

Day 7

Taupo is too great a place to only give you one day there – so you get a second one!

Adrenaline-junkies will find plenty to do here. Head up to Mount Ruapehu or why not hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing? The latter is one of New Zealand’s best day-hikes with dramatic photo-perfect views complete with emerald lakes and extinguished lava.

Day 8

The last day of the beginning of your adventure will be spent in Wellington.

Take in the views from the very top of Mount Victoria. Learn a thing or two in the exceptional Te Papa museum. And finally, end your day, and this amazing week-long journey by enjoying the thriving craft beer scene of Wellingtons with the friends you’ve made along the way.

Think that sounds like fun? That’s just the start! From Wellington, your New Zealand working holiday experience is completely up to you. You can hop across the Cook Strait to the South Island. Here you can explore glaciers, ocean kayaking, the mighty peaks of the Southern Alps, skiing, bungee jumping, and some of the best treks in the world.
