FAQs

What start dates are available?

Orientations are held at least once a month, with additional dates added during peak season. As spots on this program fill up very quickly, we ask that you contact your Travel Coordinator to discuss live availability before reserving any non-refundable flights.

Can I arrive before my orientation?

Great idea! The flight to New Zealand is long, so it is not a bad idea to spend a night or two recovering from any potential jet lag before beginning your welcome tour. If you would like to add additional nights’ accommodation, your travel coordinator will be happy to assist with this.

What does the accommodation look like during my orientation?

Our orientation includes a mixed gender dorm bed in one of the top rated hostels in the city! This is a cost efficient way to really get to know your new friends, and fully immerse yourself in the backpacker lifestyle.

If you would prefer a private room, we can speak with the hostel regarding availability, but presuming there is space this can usually be arranged. Speak to your Travel Coordinator to confirm upgrade costs and dates for your stay.

Which industries do most backpackers work for in Auckland?

Popular roles in Auckland city include serving, retail associates, administration assistants, receptionists and many more in various industries. Positions in the tourism sector are also a popular choice for backpackers, as these often come with discounted tours or trips around the country. There are few restrictions on which jobs you can hold while living in New Zealand on a working holiday visa, as long as your industry doesn’t require skills transfers for insurance purposes then the options are vast!

Should I take a suitcase or a backpack?

If you plan to do lots of hiking while in New Zealand, a backpack is the easier option. New Zealand has a wide variety of terrains, and many areas such as Queenstown, Auckland and Dunedin have lots of hills. Also, many hostels in New Zealand do not have elevators, and backpacks are easier to carry upstairs. However, suitcases have the benefit of being lockable, so if you are travelling with expensive technology they may provide extra reassurance. Whatever you decide to do, try to pack light as this will make packing and moving around the country much easier!
