FAQs

What start dates are available?

Orientations are held at least twice a month, with additional dates added during peak season. As spots on this program fill up very quickly, we ask that you contact your Travel Coordinator to discuss live availability before reserving any non refundable flights.

Why should I live in Melbourne over Sydney for my working holiday?

For those who are interested in live events, Melbourne has a much busier nightlife scene than Sydney. The city is also home to some of Australia’s largest sports venues, including the Australian Open and the Melbourne cup. Finally, living expenses in Melbourne tend to be slightly less than in Sydney making it marginally more affordable for backpackers.

How many people will be in my group?

The maximum group size per start date is 24 people, although numbers do tend to be less in Melbourne’s colder winter months.

What are the accommodations like?

You’ll be staying at a central hostel in downtown Melbourne while in the city, and in the beautiful town of Newhaven on your road trip to Phillip Island. All hostels are clean and safe, with dorm sizes varying from six to 12 people per room.

Are the penguins wild? Is this program ethical?

Phillip Island Nature Park has a dedicated Animal Ethics committee committed to ensuring that the penguins’ natural behaviours are protected while tourists enjoy the penguin parade. Boardwalks have been strategically placed to keep tourists separated from the penguins and prevent them from interfering with the wildlife. Photography is not permitted while viewing the penguins, as the bright lights can disorientate them and frighten them. These penguins are completely wild and have been nesting in the Phillip Island area for many years. Any profits made from ticket sales are all reinvested into conservation, research, education, wildlife rescue, and environmental activities on the island.
